CCS to Implement Clear Bag Procedures at Athletic Events Starting Friday, Aug. 22

New guidelines support safety and efficiency at school-based sporting events

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Cumberland County Schools (CCS) will implement clear bag procedures at all athletic events beginning Friday, Aug. 22, 2025. The procedures are designed to strengthen existing safety protocols and support a faster, more efficient entry process for families, staff and community members.

This update complements the district’s OpenGate weapons detection systems and reflects CCS’ commitment to creating safe, welcoming experiences at all school-sponsored events.

Approved Items

Each attendee may bring one clear bag, no larger than 12 inches by 15 inches by 3 inches
In addition, attendees may carry:

  • One small clutch or wristlet (no larger than 4 inches by 6 inches by 1 inch)

  • One clear, one-gallon Ziploc bag

  • A diaper bag, when accompanied by a child

  • A medical bag or medically necessary item, such as an oxygen tank or epinephrine

Additional Allowances:

Attendees may bring the following loose items if any pockets or compartments are left open and empty:

  • Coats and jackets

  • Blankets

  • Soft baby carriers or slings

  • Strollers

  • Medically required equipment, including wheelchairs or walkers

“These guidelines were designed with families in mind,” said Chad Barbour, Director of Student Activities. “We want our athletic events to be welcoming, secure and easy to access for everyone who comes to support our student-athletes.”
